Ground Zero is an open-ended role-playing game set in the year 2100, thirty years after a global nuclear war nearly wipes out humanity.
Unlike many RPGs, there are no predetermined story arcs or character paths; the world is procedurally generated and quests emerge from interactions between cities and organizations. These can be completed by computer-controlled characters as well as the player, directly impacting city development and faction rule.
After decades of disease, starvation, and mass murder, the world population finally stabilizes to its lowest point in over a millennium. Drifting survivors band into fledgling communities, and these embers of civilization begin to light a second Dark Age. In the southern former United States heartland, three developing political factions struggle to rebuild society in their own ideological images, but irreconcilable differences over technology threaten to undo them all.
The player character enters one of thirty settlements dotting the landscape and attempts to carve out a living in the brutal new wilderness. He or she may mature into a well known doctor, wealthy merchant, feared bandit, renowned mercenary, or simply an anonymous vagrant... wherever his path leads in an evolving network of cities, potentially determining the outcome of the inevitable faction war.
